How to Solve Sudoku: Beginner Techniques That Work

Image
Sudoku looks like a math puzzle, but it needs no arithmetic at all. The numbers 1 to 9 are just symbols, and you solve it with logic. Here is how to get started, and a few techniques that solve most easy and medium puzzles. The rules Fill the 9x9 grid so that every row , every column and every 3x3 box contains each of the numbers 1 to 9 exactly once. The numbers already in the grid are fixed. Technique 1: look for a square that can only be one number Pick an empty square and check which numbers are already in its row, its column and its box. If eight of the nine numbers are taken, the ninth is the answer. This is called a naked single, and many easy puzzles are solved by repeating it. Technique 2: look for a number that can only go in one place Choose a number, say 7, and look at one row, column or box. If 7 is not there yet and only one empty square in it can hold a 7 (the others see a 7 in their row, column or box), then it goes there. This is called a hidden single. Techniq...

Passphrase vs Password: Which Is Actually More Secure? (With the Math)

Which of these is harder to crack: Tr0ub4dor&3 or correct horse battery staple ? The first one looks stronger. It has capitals, a number and a symbol. The second is four plain words. But the second one is the better design, and the reason says a lot about what "strong" really means. Entropy: how unpredictable is it? Password strength is measured in bits of entropy , a way of counting how many guesses an attacker would need. It depends on two things: how big the pool is that you choose from, and how many independent choices you make. A real attacker does not guess blindly. They try the likeliest passwords first, so what matters is how predictable your pattern is. Why Tr0ub4dor&3 is weaker than it looks It is a dictionary word (troubadour) with the usual swaps (o to 0, a to 4), a symbol and a number added. Cracking tools run exactly those transformations on every word in their lists. Its real pool is "common words times common rules", which is far smalle...

Learning Times Tables: Tricks and a Practice Plan That Actually Work

A child who can recall 7×8 instantly can put their attention on the problem they are actually solving. A child who cannot has to work twice as hard on every multi-step problem for years. The goal is not just memorizing, it is fast, reliable recall. The good news is that the job is much smaller than "100 facts" sounds. How many facts are there, really? The table from 1×1 to 10×10 has 100 facts . Multiplication is commutative (6×7 = 7×6), so there are only 55 different pairs . Take away the easy tables, ×1, ×2, ×5 and ×10 (a rule, doubling, counting by fives, and adding a zero), and only the numbers 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are left. That is 21 different pairs , and several of those can be worked out from others you already know. Tricks for the harder tables ×4: double the double. 6×2 = 12, so 6×4 = 24. ×8: double the ×4. 8×6 is double 4×6, and double 24 is 48. ×9: two patterns. The digits of the answer add up to 9: 9×7 = 63, and 6 + 3 = 9. The tens digit is one less ...

What Colors Mean Around the World: A Practical Guide for Designers

A palette that feels festive in one country can feel like a funeral in another. If you design a product, a logo or packaging for an international audience, color is one of the first things worth double-checking. Here are some of the best-known differences, plus how to design around them. A note first: these are general patterns, not rules. Meanings vary within a country by religion, region, generation and context, so treat this as a starting point and ask people who live there. Red China and East Asia: luck, prosperity and celebration. Red envelopes at Lunar New Year and red wedding dress are classic examples. India: red is the traditional color for brides, and it is sacred rather than aggressive. Western Europe and the US: danger, urgency, error messages and stop signs, but also love and passion. Design watch: in the financial charts of mainland China, South Korea and Japan, red usually means prices went up, and green or blue means down. In the US and much of Europe it is t...

Why We Build Tools on a Whim: The Story of a Fickle Little Studio

"Fickle" means quick to change your mind. That is a fair description of us. One week we are deep into cross stitch, the next we are printing math practice for a kid, then we fall down a rabbit hole about color. ficklestudio26 is a small independent studio in South Korea, and this is how we work. The idea: build a tool whenever something grabs us Every time a new interest takes over, we build a small tool for it. Most of them stay small. The ones that turn out genuinely useful go on the shelf for everyone. The site has four shelves: Make , Learn , Play and Everyday . Make: the Cross Stitch Pattern Maker , the Color Palette Generator , a contrast checker and a DMC color chart. Learn: the Math Worksheet Generator , with grade-by-grade guides for parents and teachers. Everyday: the Password Generator , a passphrase generator and a strength checker. Play: small browser games are next on the workbench. We also make apps: Haul , a grocery list app for Android, and a f...

How Hackers Actually Crack Passwords (and Why Length Beats Symbols)

Most people picture a hacker typing guesses into a login box until it lets them in. That almost never happens. Real password cracking is automated, happens offline, and works because people choose passwords in predictable ways. Knowing how it works shows you what actually protects you. Step one: get a copy of the database Login forms limit attempts and lock accounts, so attackers go after a breached database instead: a copy of a service's user table, with usernames, emails and password hashes . With their own copy they can try guesses as fast as their hardware allows, with no limits and nobody watching. Hashing: the protection you cannot see A service should not store your password, only a hash, a one-way fingerprint. When you log in, it hashes what you type and compares. How well that protects you depends on the algorithm: MD5 and SHA-1 are fast, which is exactly wrong for passwords. A modern GPU can test on the order of 100 billion MD5 hashes per second. bcrypt, scrypt an...

How to Turn a Pet Photo into a Cross Stitch Pattern: Size, Colors and Photo Tips

A photo of your dog, cat or rabbit makes one of the best cross stitch gifts. It is also one of the easiest ways to end up with a pattern that is blotchy, has too many colors, or comes out the wrong size. Here is how to plan it so the stitched face still looks like your pet. 1. Choose the right photo One clear subject in good light, with a plain background. Crop close. Fill the frame with the face. A tight crop gives the eyes and nose more stitches to work with. Busy backgrounds turn into scattered single stitches. Crop them out before you upload. 2. Pick a size in stitches The pattern maker has three quick sizes: Small (50 stitches across), Medium (80) and Large (130). For a portrait or pet photo, 80 to 150 stitches across keeps faces recognizable. Simple icons and lettering work at 30 to 60 stitches. The finished size depends on your fabric. The rule is simple: stitches ÷ fabric count = inches . On 14-count Aida (the standard, and a good place to start): Design width Fin...

Haul: A Grocery List App That Sorts Itself and Checks Off with One Tap

Image
Standing in the aisle with one hand on the cart and a phone in the other, a grocery list should not fight you. You tap an item to check it off and a keyboard pops up. Your list is in the order you thought of things, so you walk past the fruit and have to come back. Haul is a grocery list app made to fix exactly that. Get Haul on Google Play (Android) → What Haul does 1. Write items, and they sort themselves Just type what you need as you think of it, for example: green chili peppers, pork, tofu, frozen dumplings, seaweed, a soda, instant noodles. Haul groups the items into store sections such as produce, meat, dairy and eggs, frozen, and snacks and drinks. A tidy up button sorts anything left over, and quantities are kept (frozen dumplings ×3). It is not always perfectly accurate, and it does not try to be. The goal is not exact categories but to put things from the same part of the store together, so you visit each aisle once instead of walking laps. The same list in list vie...
