How to Turn a Pet Photo into a Cross Stitch Pattern: Size, Colors and Photo Tips

A photo of your dog, cat or rabbit makes one of the best cross stitch gifts. It is also one of the easiest ways to end up with a pattern that is blotchy, has too many colors, or comes out the wrong size. Here is how to plan it so the stitched face still looks like your pet.

1. Choose the right photo

  • One clear subject in good light, with a plain background.
  • Crop close. Fill the frame with the face. A tight crop gives the eyes and nose more stitches to work with.
  • Busy backgrounds turn into scattered single stitches. Crop them out before you upload.

2. Pick a size in stitches

The pattern maker has three quick sizes: Small (50 stitches across), Medium (80) and Large (130). For a portrait or pet photo, 80 to 150 stitches across keeps faces recognizable. Simple icons and lettering work at 30 to 60 stitches.

The finished size depends on your fabric. The rule is simple: stitches ÷ fabric count = inches. On 14-count Aida (the standard, and a good place to start):

Design widthFinished size at 14-countFabric to cut (3 in / 7.5 cm extra on each side)
50 stitches3.6 in / 9.1 cmabout 9.6 in / 24 cm
80 stitches5.7 in / 14.5 cmabout 11.7 in / 30 cm
130 stitches9.3 in / 23.6 cmabout 15.3 in / 39 cm

A higher count makes the same pattern smaller (80 stitches is 4.4 in on 18-count), and a lower count makes it larger (7.3 in on 11-count, which is easy on the eyes for beginners and kids). Evenweave or linen stitched over two threads follows the same math at half the count, so 28-count over two matches 14-count Aida. You can check any combination with the size calculator.

3. Choose how many colors

Every color in the chart is a real DMC thread. The maker offers Simple (10 colors), Balanced (20) and Detailed (36). More colors capture more detail, but you also buy and keep track of more skeins. If the number of threads is too high, switch to Simple or lower the color limit to 10 to 15. For faces, start with Balanced or Detailed and use a Large size.

4. Clean up the pattern

Photos create lonely single stitches that are slow to sew. The tidy-up settings remove them. If the background is busy, raising Tidy single stitches to 3 or 4 helps, but cropping the photo is better.

5. Print it

Choose Letter or A4, then check the PDF preview to see how each sheet will print. The chart shows a bold line every 10 stitches and numbers along the edges, and the arrows mark the center, which is where you start stitching. The thread list gives every DMC code with its symbol and stitch count.

If the face looks blotchy

Use more stitches (Large), choose Detailed, and crop the photo closer to the face. That fixes most problems.
