Free Password and Passphrase Generator: Secure and Private
Reusing one password across many sites is how most accounts get taken over. The Password Generator creates strong random passwords and easy-to-remember passphrases in your browser. It is free, needs no account, and nothing is sent anywhere or saved.
Passwords and passphrases
- Password: choose the length and the character types (uppercase, numbers, symbols), optionally avoid look-alike characters such as 0, O, l, 1 and I, and include specific characters if a site demands them.
- Passphrase: a string of random words that is easier to remember and type. Pick the number of words, a separator (hyphen, dot, underscore, space or none), capitalization and an optional number. Try the passphrase generator.
- Generate 1, 5, 10 or 20 at a time and copy with one click.
How the randomness works
Every password is made with the Web Crypto API, the same cryptographically secure randomness browsers use for HTTPS. That is very different from the basic Math.random() function, which is predictable enough that it should never be used for security. Generation happens entirely on your device: no request is sent to a server, so there is nothing to intercept.
How long should a password be?
For most accounts, 14 characters or more is a solid target, and length matters more than complexity. Use a different password for every site and keep them in a password manager. Want to test one you already have? The password strength checker shows how strong it is.
