Photo to Cross Stitch Pattern Maker: Free Printable Chart with DMC Colors

Want to stitch a photo of your dog, your kids or a favorite place? The Cross Stitch Pattern Maker turns any photo into a printable chart with DMC thread colors, symbols and a floss list. It runs in your browser, it is free to try, and you do not need an account.

How it works

  1. Upload a photo. PNG, JPG or WebP. Pictures with a clear subject and good contrast, like portraits, simple illustrations and logos, convert best.
  2. Choose a size and a look. Small (50 stitches), Medium (80) or Large (130), and a color style from Simple (10 colors, bold) to Detailed (36 colors). You can fine-tune the stitch width and height, the color limit and the cleanup strength.
  3. Preview and download. The chart, including page layout, updates as you change settings. Download a printable PDF when you like what you see.

What is in the PDF

  • A chart with symbols, a color chart, or both, with a grid every 10 stitches
  • A thread legend with DMC floss codes and stitch statistics
  • An optional cover page with your original photo and a cloth and thread guide
  • Large designs are tiled automatically across several pages

Made to be stitchable

Photos turn into a lot of stray single stitches, which is no fun to sew. The cleanup settings (anti-confetti, smoothing and a minimum region size) remove scattered stitches so the pattern is practical to work on. Thread colors are chosen with perceptual color matching, so the result looks natural rather than flat.

Fabric size

Pick your Aida fabric count, from 11 ct to 32 ct, to see how large the finished piece will be. The cross stitch size calculator does the same math on its own, and the DMC color chart helps you match thread colors to hex values.

Free and Pro

The free PDF covers up to 20 colors on A4. Optional Pro passes add up to 80 colors, any paper size, vector PDFs for sharp lines at any print size, painting and erasing individual stitches, and permission to sell the patterns you make. Passes are one-time purchases, never subscriptions, and you can download a sample first to check the result. How passes work.

Your photo stays with you

Your photo is resized in your browser, and only a small grid of color values is used to build the pattern. The original file never leaves your device and nothing is stored.
