When a holiday lands on a weekend
For federal employees, a holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and one that falls on a Sunday is observed on the Monday after. In 2027 that affects three holidays: Juneteenth (Saturday, June 19) is observed Friday, June 18; Independence Day (Sunday, July 4) is observed Monday, July 5; and Christmas Day (Saturday, December 25) is observed Friday, December 24. Also, because New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, the federal day off is Friday, December 31, 2027.
